How to find information on the network

As the World Wide Web grows, it is easy to become lost in the network. The problem is: how to find the information I need? There are some tools, which make 'navigation' in the web easier.

Here are some links to sites, which provide these tools: references grouped by some key (subject, location), browsable and searchable indices. By the way, this list is incomplete, there are many other servers, which I didn't have time to include here yet.

World Wide Web Worm - automatically generated list of almost all WWW resources. You can search it in many ways.
W3 catalog. Regexp search of long descriptions. Returns descriptions, which are hypertext.
CERN WWW index - by subject.
Index of WWW indices by subject.
EINet Galaxy index. By subject, browsable, searchable, users can add info online.
Planet Earth. By subject and misc.
Joel's Hierarchical Subject Index, mostly humanistic.
