Minutes of E362 FD weekly meeting, 1996-Sep-17, 19:00 - 22:00, KEK R307. Present:K.Nishikawa,T.Ishii,T.Kobayashi,T.Chikamatsu,A.Sakai,T.Inagaki(INS), K.Nakamura,M.Sakuda,Y.Oyama,T.Ishida(KEK),I.Lim,E.Jeong(Chonnam), M.Kohama(Kobe),K.Maruyama(Tohoku),M.Etoh(Tokai),M.Nakamura(Niigata) (1) We have new members from Chonnam University (Korea). In-Taek Lim and his master course student Eun-Mi Jeong. She wants to finish her thesis at the end of 1997. (2) Beam Maruyama calculates the energy spectrum of nu_mu and nu_e using FLUKA model. The nu_e flux is new. At 10**20 POT, nu_mu (nu_e) fluxes at FD and SK are 3.9x10**12/cm**2 (3.4x10**10/cm**2) and 3.0x10**6/cm**2(2.2x10**4/cm**2). He shows that nu_e flux is mainly from mu-decays and the contributuion of Ke3 decays is smaller by an order. =1.5GeV and =1.4GeV. He will calculate the flux using Sanford-Wang model for comparison. (3) SCIFI * Etoh shows how to calibrate the fiber positions using an LED sheet. He reported last week that CCD sees 82mmx95mm area of IIT window. From Hamamatsu's information, it is reasonable except for the top 5mm area. The present coverage is good enough IF we know the boundary accurately and the efficiency is uniform over the erea. If it is not the case, broader coverage is necessary. Sakuda shows that one fiber is seen by about 2x4 pixels. Hamamatsu can adjust the center of the CCD and broaden the coverage by another 10-20%. *Etoh is now preparing for the measurement of the absolute efficiency (=light yield). *SuzukiAT reports the status of a new fiber spooling machine via email. Kawai/Ishikawa(Nagoya) propose to build a lighter drum structure. They will establish the method in October. (4) Veto/TOF system (Veto surronds SCIFI and TOF is in front of Muon ranger) A first design for Veto/TOF counter system, based on Sasaki's idea, is explained by Sakuda. Sasaki proposes to use TMC module (Time Memory Cell, Y. Arai's Trade-mark) for Veto/TOF system. TMC can keep all of the timing history with accuracy of 0.5ns over 2micro-sec after the trigger signal (=start signal of the beam gate) is fed. Since the beam gate is about 1micro sec, this is good enough. We can keep all Charged current and Neutral current events. The correspondence between muon chamber time and TOF (t0 for the drift time), for example, must be obtained later at the offline on an event-by-event base. He thinks that this scheme of FD matches the present SK trigger scheme and thus 1kton detector. We have only 96 TOF counters which covers 1/2 of muon ranger face and 100 PMTs. We need to optimize the width and the thickness of the counters. The thisckness mainly determines the light yield and thus the time resolution. The cost of scintillator is proportional to the thickness (the area that we must cover is the same). The width (=granularity, 20cm or so) determines the number of PMTs and TMCs. We need about 400 channels in total. Cost of one TMC (32ch) is about 400,000yen. We must take 96 TOF counters from VENUS in October. (5) Muon chambers Ishii reports: *SAAN Co. says that it takes three months to get the VENUS gas circulation system work again. The cost estimation will be given soon. *Chikamatsu reports the gas leak rate for all F/B chambers. Ishii must show the expected leak rate of the system at the safety committee next week. *They need 3 weeks shift work to finish removing all electronics boards and complete the leak test. Ishii will send us a shift table. Chikamatsu shows the muon energy spectrum using GEANT simulation when 1kton detector is combined with muon ranger. The muon energy below 1 GeV is measured by 1kton detector itsself and that above 1.5GeV can be measured by muon ranger. About 80% of the spectrum can be measured. (6) LG calibration Kobayashi will establish the calibration method for 3x3 blocks within this year. He proposes to use INS electron beam to obtain the absolute energy scale from 3x3 blocks and use the cosmic-rays to calibrate the relative gains for the remaining 600-1000 blocks. He asks INS workshop to make the structure for the test. Others: *KEK OPEN HOUSE was held on September 15(Sunday). About 3500 people visited KEK. About 1000 people came to PS experimental hall, including E362 experiment. Nakamura gave a lecture on "Neutrinos" at the Seminar Hall. *Transfer 1kton tank from the present position to another place close to our experimental hall (Taino et al.). *Software meeting on Sept 19. ****E362 Collaboration meeting on November 1******* //(Memo by Sakuda)
