MINUTES OF E362 FRONT DETECTOR MEETING Date: 16:00-18:00, January 9, 1996 Place: KEK R307 Subject: Choice of fiber diameter etc. Present: Nishikawa, Chikamatsu (INS), Nakamura, Sakuda(KEK), Etou(Toukai) The purpose of the casual meeting is to decide on the fiber diameter which will be used for the proto-type water/SCIFI detector. (1) Etou reports again the offline analysis of SCIFI data taken on December 4. He revises the numbers for fibers coated with glue. L=1.5m from IIT L=3.5m (a) 0.5mmD, 2 layers 96+-0.5% 85.9+-1% (b) 0.5mmD, 3 layers 99% 95% (c) 0.7mmD, 2 layers 100% 98% The improvement since the last meeting is to check the detection efficiency when the particles enter the fiber detector at various angles. His previous results were correct. So, we choose (c). (2) Sakuda summarizes what we should do with the proto-type detector. (a) The detection efficiency and the light yield of the fibers can be tested with cosmic-rays and beta-source. For this purpose a small sample of fibers will do. (b) We need to show that the structure (1mx1m area x5 sheets) can be built under the presence of water. We need about 60-80km long fibers. (3) Nakamura (Nagoya) says that we must build a new drum of about 1.3m diameter to make 4m long fiber sheets. It will take about 6 months. Nishikawa will order 60-80km long fibers (0.7mmD) to Kurary. (4) Chikamatsu studies the effect of pi/proton separation. Preliminary analysis indicates that even if we have good pi/p separation in SCIFI (dE/dx or range), we will not improve QE selection. The present cuts based on the kinematics (=position resolution) are good enough to reduce 1pi-production background. /(Memo by Sakuda)
