Faculty Advising
Faculty involvement in academic advising in Physical Sciences takes many forms.
Each department assigns one faculty member as Chief Undergraduate Advisor. This
person works closely with the academic counselors. Chief Advisors review petitions
involving departmental requirements, evaluate some requests for change of major,
review courses for articulation agreements with other schools, and participate
in some information and orientation programs. Chief Advisors and/or undergraduate
committees review students who are subject to academic probation or disqualification
and make recommendations for action to the Associate Dean.
Although only the Department of Physics and Astronomy assigns a faculty advisor
to each student, many Chemistry, Earth and Enviromental Sciences, and Mathematics
majors also develop close relationships with faculty members. This is usually
accomplished during the Junior and Senior years through involvement in undergraduate
research, independent study, and the smaller upper-division courses. Most advising
about graduate school options is done by faculty members (either informally
or after a referral by an academic counselor).
If you have specific academic advising questions or questions about degree
requirements or your academic status, please contact the Physical
Sciences Student Affairs office.
