UCI, the youngest member of the nine-campus University of California system, is located in southern California 40 miles (65km) south of Los Angeles and just minutes from Pacific Ocean beaches. UCI began classes in 1965 and is the fastest growing campus in the system with current enrollments at 17,350 students.
Academic Excellence . . . The campus is recognized internationally for academic excellence in biological and medical sciences, engineering, environmental science, fine arts, humanities, physical sciences, and social sciences. The National Academies of Science and Engineering have established their western facility contiguous to the campus.
Regional Character . . . UCI is the only research university in Orange County, an active and diversified high-technology region that enjoys an "equivalent gross national product" that ranks 30th in the world, surpassing that of most nations. It also enjoys cultural diversity on account of extensive immigration from many parts of the world.
During the school year, there are no on-campus lodging facilities. However, off-campus lodging provides a wide variety of accommodations and rates, all within 15 minutes of UCI by automobile. Unfortunately, no hotels are within walking distance of the campus. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Irvine Hilton Hotel, but many other options are available. A complete listing of nearby hotels in the Hotel Guide 97-98. You should make your own arrangements, but foreign attendees can contact Cheryl Young at email@example.com or (714) 824-6184 for help with their reservations.
Parking is available at the parking garage across the street from the site of the workshop. Parking permits will be distributed by the parking garage attendant. If you do not use the garage, parking in the standard parking lots requires that you purchase a parking permit for $4 at the the ticket booth kiosk near all entrances to the University. The permit dispensers only accept quarters and dollar bills, so please have correct change available.
A broad spectrum of possibilities for recreation and entertainment available in the Orange County area: Disneyland and other amusement parks, expansive beaches, art galleries and museums, professional sports teams, and performing arts facilities. Cooled by ocean breezes, the area's average spring temperature is 72oF/22oC. Generally, there is very little precipitation in late March, but an umbrella may come in handy.
Plentiful opportunities for fine dining can be found in nearby communities. University Center is a shopping, dining, and entertainment complex is immediately adjacent to UCI.
Within a short drive (and everyone drives in Southern California), there a many interesting and exciting places to visit. Newport Harbor, San Joaquin Wildlife Reserve, Laguna Beach, and of course Disneyland.
Conference Facilities . . . UCI features modern, comfortable buildings, including a large-capacity events center, and a performing arts theater.
Air travel is convenient: John Wayne (Orange County) Airport is only 10 minutes away, and the Los Angeles International Airport and Ontario Airport are 1 hour away.
I hope to see you there! If you have any questions, please contact Professor Steven Barwick at firstname.lastname@example.org.
