DOCUMENT DELIVERY SERVICE is available to faculty, administrative staff, and graduate students at all UCI campus libraries. Those with VMS/VAX or UNIX/ORION accounts may request items from UCI Libraries (DDS) or from other UCs (ILL). DDS requests will be processed within 24 hours. ILL requests will be processed within 3-10 working days. All materials will be delivered to the department office.

MAKING A MELDOC DDS/ILL REQUEST

Like MELVYL, MELDOC offers several help commands. To obtain help, the user types HELP MELDOC NAME (i.e. HELP MELDOC DDS).

The unix user types MELDOC at the system prompt and then searches MELVYL. Once the material is located in MELVYL, a request may be placed. The user notes the MELVYL record number, located to the left of the MELVYL entry. If the material is owned by UCI, a DDS request is placed by typing DDS space and the MELVYL record number (command does not need to be in Caps). If the material is NOT owned by UCI, an ILL request is placed by typing ILL space and the MELVYL record number. When this is typed, MELDOC forms a request for this book. The user fills in "book or article" and answers the questions accordingly.

If the user wants a DDS article, a recharge account number must be supplied. DDS charges $3.50/article up to 20 pages, plus an additional $.20/exposure beyond 20 pages, for copying parts of books and periodicals, and $3.50/article up to 10 pages, plus an additional $.50/exposure beyond 10 pages, for microforms. For ILL articles, the user must complete the "willingness to pay" field.

The menu at the top of the screen gives the user the options (E,P,C) to edit, process, or cancel the request. When the user types "E" to edit, the following message will appear: "Please edit your request and type ESC when done." The user can then use the arrow keys or the return key to move the cursor around and change the information in the box. When the user is satisfied with the request, type "P" to process, and the request will be sent. If the request is not to be processed, type "C" to cancel. The user also has the option of receiving a copy of their request (available on ORION accounts only).

MAKING A MELDOC MELVYL/MEDLINE REQUEST

To send a MEDLINE request, the user must first find the article wanted by searching MELVYL/MEDLINE. The record number for the article is then noted. This number appears to the left of the author's name and the record number is used for the selection. MEDLINE requests are routed to the Science Library. If possible, they are filled as Document Delivery requests. If unavailable at UCI, requests are filled as Interlibrary Loan requests. Document Delivery requests take 24 hours to process. Interlibrary Loan requests normally take 3-10 working days.

MAKING A MELDOC PICKUP REQUEST

If the user has material to be picked up by the DDS courier, a request can be made by using the PICKUP command. The PICKUP command is different from the DDS, ILL, and MEDLINE commands as it does not require a record number. It will ask you for the quanity of items to be picked up. The request can be edited to change the location of the items to be picked up (available on ORION accounts only).

LEAVING MELDOC

To exit the MELDOC program, the user types "exit". This will end the program and return the user to the system prompt.

MAKING A DDS/ILL REQUEST

If the user does not need to search MELVYL, a request can be placed without entering MELDOC. If UCI owns the material, type DDS at the system prompt. A DDS form will appear on the screen and the user completes it. If UCI does NOT own the material, ILL is typed, and the user completes the ILL form.

To edit these requests, answer "y" when asked if you wish to make any changes. Then enter the line number to be changed and fill in the new information. Those with ORION accounts may receive a copy of their request by answering "y" when asked.

For pickup of library materials, answer "y" when asked if this is for pickup only. The user can then enter the quantity of items to be picked up. The request can also be edited to give an alternate pickup location (available on ORION accounts only).
