Grading:
| Quizzes/Homework | 25% |
| Midterm Exam | 35% |
| Final Exam | 40% |
Goals: To understand the concepts and the equations that describe
electricity and magnetism.
Huh? Please feel free to ask questions in class. If you don't
understand something, it's probably because I'm not explaining things well
and therefore lots of other people are confused as well. So if you ask
questions, you'll be doing everyone a favor.
Texts: Fundamentals of Physics, Halliday, Resnick and Walker,
Fifth Edition, John Wiley and Sons. We will cover Chapters 22-33. A recommended
text that is good at explaining concepts is Hewitt's Conceptual Physics
(7th edition), Harper Collins. Interactive LearningWare (available for
both the Mac and PC) is good source of additional problems and explanations.
It is sold in the bookstore.
Physics Stockroom: The Physics stockroom (FRH 1134) is open between the hours of 9-12 and 1-3 Monday through Friday. Most administrative matters are handled through the stockroom.
Enrollment: You must be enrolled in a discussion section and
attend that section for the entire quarter. If you are not enrolled in
a section that you can attend, make the necessary add/drop using the TELE
Add/Drop system (TAD). The deadline is Friday, October 3. No adds will
be allowed after October 3. Students who wish to drop a class or make a
grade change after October 3 should do so in person at the Physics stockroom
(FRH 1134).
Handouts: Copies of previous handouts are available at the Physics
stockroom.
Homework: You should bring completed homework assignments to
your discussion section where they will be occasionally collected in lieu
of a quiz. No late homework will be accepted.
Quizzes: Quizzes will be given in the last 15 minutes of your
Thursday discussion section. They will consist of one or two problems similar
to the homework problems assigned for that week. Quizzes will be closed
book. No quizzes will be given the first week (9/29), the week of the midterm
(10/27), or Thanksgiving week. No make-up quizzes will be given. Each quiz
is worth 10 points. A score of zero will be given for a missed quiz. Your
lowest score will not count. Quiz scores will be posted outside FRH 1134
and on the internet (http://www.physics.uci.edu). You should check to make
sure these have been correctly recorded. Graded quizzes will be returned
in discussion sections. Quizzes that are not picked up will placed in boxes
inside FRH 1134. They will be left in boxes for 2 weeks and then will be
discarded. Further information on quizzes can be found on the last page
of this handout.
Answers and Solutions: Solutions to the homework and quizzes
will be posted outside the Physics Stockroom on Thursday afternoon. They
will then be available at Replica (in the Marketplace shopping center).
Answers to the odd numbered problems are available at the end of the book.
Answers (without solutions) to all the problems are posted outside the
Physics Stockroom.
Lecture Notes: The professor's lecture notes are available at Replica (in the Marketplace shopping center).
Tutoring: Free tutoring is available from the Society of Physics
Students (FRH 2169).
Exams: The Midterm exam will be given in class on Friday, October
31 (ELH 100). The Midterm will cover chapters 22-27. A copy of previous
midterms and solutions are available at Replica. The 2-hour Final exam
will be given on Wednesday, December 10 from 8:00-10:00 am in ELH 100.
The Final will be comprehensive. All exams will be closed book, but you
may bring one 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of paper with formulas. Calculators are
allowed. You must bring picture identification to both exams.
Cheating: Anyone caught cheating on a quiz or exam will automatically
fail the course. In addition, the appropriate deans will be notified. Cheating
includes giving or receiving assistance.
Makeup Policy: No makeup exams or quizzes will be given. Absence
from the Midterm or the Final will be accepted for the following two reasons
only:
1) a serious personal illness documented by a typed and signed
letter from a licensed physician on his/her own office stationary stating
the illness and need for your absence, or
2) a death in your immendiate family documented by a typed and
signed letter from the attending physician, hospital, etc., on professional
stationary giving the date and the nature of the relationship.
